2016 General Election Candidates: Laois

Laois-Offaly had been the oldest constituency in Ireland, going all the way back to the 1921 general election. 2016 will be the first election without it, and this means new challenges for the TDs seeking re-election in the new, separate Laois and Offaly constituencies. Seán Fleming can no longer benefit from transfers from Cowen candidate in Offaly, something Fianna Fáil seems to have realised, as they are running him alone. Fine Gael are hoping to do better, with Thomasina Connell in position to take transfers from Charles Flanagan. Meanwhile, Sinn Féin TD Brian Stanley will be hoping to keep his seat, and Labour are fielding Senator John Whelan, while the Green Party have put forward Sinead Moore.
